Etymology

Atâta is the feminine singular form of atât, the core Romanian word for measuring something against an implied standard: so much or so many. It descends from Latin eccum tantum, joining the pointing particle eccum ('behold, here') with tantum ('so much, so great'). The same eccum element shows up in other Romanian demonstratives, including acest ('this') and acel ('that'), while tantum survives independently in several Romance languages.
