Etymology
Atât comes from Latin, built on tantum, meaning so much. Romanian added the reinforcing prefix a-, common in its demonstrative words, to the root that gave tantum. The same Latin root produced similar words for so much or so in other Romance languages. Romanian kept the word flexible, so it can act as an adverb, an adjective, or a pronoun depending on the sentence.
