Etymology
The origin of "copil" is disputed among linguists. It does not come from Latin, unlike most core Romanian vocabulary. The leading theory links it to a pre-Roman Balkan substrate word, based on its close resemblance to Albanian "kopil", meaning an illegitimate child. If correct, this would make "copil" one of the small set of Romanian words inherited from the language spoken in the region before Roman conquest.
