Prefere is the third-person subjunctive form of the verb a prefera, to prefer. Romanian took this verb from French préférer during the nineteenth-century push to re-Latinize its vocabulary, and préférer itself descends from Latin praeferre, a compound of prae, before, and ferre, to carry. The core sense is to carry or place one thing ahead of another.
