Etymology

Romanian borrowed "ghid" from French "guide" in the 19th century, during a period when Romanian absorbed large numbers of French words as it modernized its vocabulary. French "guide" itself came from Old Italian "guida", rooted in a Frankish word meaning to show the way or watch over. That Germanic root traces back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning "to see".
