Etymology

Romanian borrowed "a funcționa" from French "fonctionner" in the nineteenth century, during the period when Romanian vocabulary was reshaped along Romance lines. The French verb goes back to Latin "functio" (performance, execution), from the verb "fungor, fungi" (to perform, to discharge a duty). "Funcționează" is the third person singular and plural present indicative form.
