The word comes from Latin geminus, meaning twin or double. Romanian inherited it directly, and the vowel changed shape depending on what followed it: ea before a back vowel gives the singular geamăn, while plain e before the front vowel i gives the plural gemeni. This ea/e alternation is a regular pattern in Romanian, not unique to this word.
