Etymology
Surprindere is a deverbal noun built from the verb a surprinde, meaning to surprise or catch unawares. A surprinde entered Romanian from French surprendre, which goes back to Latin super- (over, upon) plus prehendere (to seize, grasp). The noun form adds the Romanian suffix -ere, the same ending used to turn verbs into abstract nouns, as in vinde becoming vindere.
