Etymology
Romanian borrowed geniu from French génie, which itself descends from Latin genius, the guardian spirit assigned to a person at birth. The Latin word ties back to gignere, to beget or bring forth. Over time the sense shifted from a personal guiding spirit to the modern idea of outstanding natural talent.
