Etymology
Profesionist entered Romanian during the nineteenth and twentieth century wave of borrowing from French, when Romanian rebuilt much of its formal vocabulary on French and Latin models. It combines the root of profesiune (profession) with the suffix -ist, itself from French -iste, which marks a person tied to a field or practice. The chain runs back to Latin professio, a public declaration, from profiteri, to declare openly.
