Etymology
Romanian borrowed "grad" in the nineteenth century, during the wave of Latin and French vocabulary that reshaped the modern language. The immediate source is French "grade", itself from Latin "gradus", meaning step or pace. Over time the Latin word for a physical step came to mean a stage, rank, or unit of measurement, and Romanian kept that abstract sense.
