Etymology
Romanian dictionaries trace "aștepta" to Vulgar Latin astectare, a reshaped form of exspectare (or a blend with adspectare), both built on spectare, "to watch, look at." The prefix ex- or ad- plus the frequentative spectare gave a sense of watching out for something, which shifted to waiting for it. Most Romance languages instead kept exspectare directly, which is why the Romanian form looks unusual next to Italian aspettare or Spanish esperar.
