Etymology
Romanian borrowed "obiect" from French "objet" and Latin "objectum" in the 19th century, during the wave of Romance-language borrowing that modernized Romanian vocabulary. The Latin source is the past participle of "obicere", meaning "to throw before" or "to put in the way of". That verb combines the prefix "ob-" (toward, against) with "iacere" (to throw).
