Etymology
Obiectiv entered Romanian in the 19th century as a borrowing from French objectif, part of the wave of French and Latin vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French objectif descends from Medieval Latin obiectivus, built from obiectus, the past participle of obicere, meaning to throw or place before. Obicere joins the prefix ob- (toward, against) with iacere (to throw), a verb tracing back to a Proto-Indo-European root for throwing. The core image is something set down in front of the mind, the shared source of both object and objective.
