Etymology
Romanian borrowed "cretin" from French "crétin" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French loans that shaped modern Romanian vocabulary. The French word itself came from an Alpine dialect term for someone suffering from cretinism, a condition of stunted growth and impaired mental development linked to iodine deficiency. That dialect term is thought to derive from "chrétien" (Christian), used to insist that such a person, however afflicted, was still fully human. Over time the medical sense faded and the word became a general insult for a stupid person.
