Etymology
Romanian borrowed "enorm" from French "énorme" in the modern era, as part of the wave of French vocabulary that reshaped Romanian in the 19th century. The French word descends from Latin "enormis", built from "e-" (out of) and "norma" (a rule, a carpenter's square, a standard). Something "enormis" was literally outside the norm, and the sense narrowed over time to mean simply huge in size or degree.
