Etymology

Romanian merit was borrowed from French mérite and reinforced by the learned Latin meritum, the neuter past participle of merēre, meaning to earn or deserve. The word entered Romanian during the nineteenth century, when the language absorbed many French and Latin terms to modernize its vocabulary. Latin merēre itself is traced by etymologists to the Proto-Indo-European root *(s)mer-, meaning to get a share of something.
