Etymology

Romanian borrowed "amiral" from French "amiral", part of a wave of French naval and military vocabulary adopted in the 19th century. French in turn took the word from medieval Latin "amiralis", which came from Arabic "amir" (commander), often in the phrase "amir al-bahr" (commander of the sea). The initial "a" was reinforced in European languages through association with Latin "admirabilis" (admirable), which is why English spells it with a "d".
