Etymology

Norma entered Romanian in the nineteenth century through French norme, part of a wave of French vocabulary that reshaped modern Romanian. French norme in turn descends from Latin norma, which meant a carpenter's square or a rule used to check right angles. The word's sense shifted from a physical measuring tool to an abstract standard of behavior or output.
