Etymology
Privat entered Romanian in the nineteenth century as part of the wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized the language's vocabulary. It comes from French privé, itself from Latin privatus, the past participle of privare, meaning to set apart or to deprive of public function. Because it was borrowed directly rather than inherited from spoken Latin, it kept a shape close to the Latin original instead of undergoing the sound changes seen in older Romanian words.
