Etymology
Grec comes from the Latin Graecus, the Roman name for the people of Greece. Latin borrowed the term from Greek Γραικός (Graikos), an old tribal name that Romans applied to Greeks generally before the Greeks' own name for themselves, Hellenes, became common in scholarly use. Romanian inherited the word through popular Latin, alongside the parallel borrowed form Grecia for the country.
