Etymology
Cântă comes from the Latin verb cantare, meaning to sing, which was itself a frequentative form of canere. Romanian kept the verb almost intact across two thousand years of sound change, turning the Latin a into the Romanian â sound. The form cântă is the third person present, used for both he/she/it sings and they sing.
