Etymology
Romanian took "mir" from Church Slavonic "мѵро" (miro), which itself came from Greek "μύρον" (myron), meaning sweet oil or unguent. The word entered Romanian through the Orthodox Church rather than through Latin, which sets it apart from most core vocabulary. It has named the consecrated oil used in baptism and confirmation since the earliest Romanian religious texts.
