Etymology
Romanian borrowed "investiga" from French "investiguer" and Latin "investigare" during the 19th-century re-Latinization of the language, when many everyday Slavic-derived terms were supplemented or replaced with French and Latin borrowings. The Latin verb combines "in-" (into) with "vestigare" (to track, to trace), itself built on "vestigium" (footprint, trace). The core image is following a trail to its source.
