Etymology

Romanian borrowed "grup" from French "groupe" during the nineteenth-century wave of modernization that reshaped much of Romanian vocabulary. French "groupe" itself came from Italian "gruppo", a word tied to Germanic terms for a round mass or lump. The Romanian form kept the meaning almost unchanged: a cluster of people or things treated as one unit.
