Romanian "acest" comes from a Vulgar Latin compound of the deictic particle "ecce" (behold, here) and the demonstrative "iste" (this). This ecce-plus-iste pattern reinforced the fading classical Latin demonstratives, and it left similar results across the Romance family. Romanian kept the full compound as "acest," while Catalan preserved an almost identical shape. The distal counterpart "acela" (that) was built the same way, pairing "ecce" with "ille" (that) instead of "iste."
