Etymology

Guvern entered Romanian in the 19th century through French gouvernement, part of a wave of French and Latin borrowings that modernized Romanian political vocabulary. The ultimate source is Latin gubernare, to steer or direct, itself borrowed from Greek kybernan, to steer a ship. The Greek verb may not be native Indo-European; some linguists suspect it came into Greek from an older Mediterranean language, so no secure PIE root is reconstructed.
