Etymology
Guvernator entered Romanian through French gouverneur and Latin gubernator, both meaning one who steers or governs. The Latin word comes from the verb gubernare, to steer a ship or direct, which Latin itself borrowed from Greek kybernan. Romanian adopted the word during its 19th-century wave of Romance vocabulary borrowing, alongside the native verb a guverna.
