Etymology
Romanian borrowed "adio" from Italian "addio" in the modern period, alongside many other Italian and French terms of courtesy. The Italian word itself contracts the phrase "a Dio (vi raccomando)", meaning "to God (I commend you)". The same underlying pattern appears across Romance languages as a way to hand a departing person over to divine care.
