Etymology
Război came into Romanian from Slavic, where a form close to Old Church Slavonic razbojь meant a violent breaking apart, built from the prefix raz- (apart) and a root meaning to strike. Neighboring Slavic languages split that root's sense in two directions: Bulgarian and Serbian razboj came to mean a weaving loom, the frame whose beater strikes the threads into place, while Russian razboj came to mean banditry or armed robbery. Romanian kept a trace of both paths, using război mainly for war but also, in weaving contexts, for the loom itself.
