Romanian borrowed "sos" in the nineteenth century, when French cooking terms flowed into the language alongside German culinary influence. The immediate source is French "sauce", reinforced by German "Soße". Both trace back to Latin "salsa", the feminine form of "salsus", meaning salted, from the noun "sal", salt.
