Etymology

Scădea comes from Latin excadere, a compound of ex- (out, down) and cadere (to fall). The same Latin cadere gave Romanian cădea (to fall), so scădea originally meant something close to 'to fall away'. Over time the sense narrowed to 'decrease' and, in mathematics, 'subtract'. The prefix ex- regularly reduces to s- in Romanian, a pattern seen in other Latin-derived verbs.
