Etymology

Romanian borrowed "han" from Ottoman Turkish "han", which meant a roadside inn or caravanserai where merchants and travelers could rest and store goods. The word entered Romanian during the centuries of Ottoman political and commercial influence in the region. It does not descend from Latin, unlike most core Romanian vocabulary.
