Etymology
The word came into Romanian from French "idiot/idiote" during the 19th-century modernization of the language, when many everyday and learned terms were imported from Western Romance languages. French took it from Latin "idiota", which came from Greek "idiōtēs", meaning a private citizen or layman, someone who held no public office or special skill. Over time the sense narrowed from "ordinary, untrained person" to "ignorant person" and finally to "fool". "Idioată" is simply the feminine form, built with the standard Romanian feminine adjective ending "-ă".
