Etymology
Romanian borrowed "idiot" from French "idiot" in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French loanwords that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. French took the word from Latin "idiota", meaning a private person or layman. Latin in turn borrowed it from Greek "idiotes", someone who held no public office and stayed out of civic affairs. Over time the sense drifted from "ordinary private citizen" to "ignorant person" to today's plain insult.
