"Fug" is the first person singular present form of the verb "a fugi", inherited directly from Latin "fugere", meaning to flee or run away. Romanian kept this verb as the everyday word for running, both literal and figurative, unlike some other Romance languages where it lost ground to other verbs. The same Latin root also gave English "fugitive" and "refuge".
