Etymology

Păstra came into Romanian from a South Slavic source, related to Bulgarian and Old Church Slavonic verbs meaning to guard or tend a flock. That Slavic root is itself a relative of Latin pastor, the shepherd, a word built on the idea of watching over and feeding. So at its root, păstra shares a family resemblance with the same ancient idea behind pastor and pasture: someone who watches over something so it stays safe.
