Însă comes from the Latin emphatic pronoun ipsa, the feminine form of ipse, meaning 'herself' or 'itself'. Over time the sound sequence shifted, with a nasal creeping in before the s, and the word drifted from marking emphasis to marking contrast. The same Latin root gives Romanian its îns- family of emphatic pronouns, such as însuși and însumi.
