Etymology

Iluzie entered Romanian from French illusion in the nineteenth century, part of a wave of French borrowings that reshaped Romanian's learned vocabulary. French illusion goes back to Latin illusio, a noun built from illudere, meaning to mock or deceive. The Latin verb itself combines in- with ludere, to play, so the base sense is something like a playing upon someone, a trick.
