Etymology
Renunța entered Romanian in the nineteenth century, during the wave of French and Latin borrowings that reshaped Romanian vocabulary. It traces to Latin renuntiare, built from re- (back, again) and nuntiare (to announce, from nuntius, messenger). The same Latin root gives Romanian anunța (to announce) and pronunța (to pronounce), and it gives English renounce by way of Old French.
