Chil entered Romanian through French chyle, part of the wave of modern medical vocabulary borrowed from French in the 19th century. French chyle goes back to Latin chylus, which in turn comes from Greek khylos, meaning juice or sap. The word kept its narrow medical sense across all these languages: the pale fluid that forms when digested fat mixes with lymph in the gut.
