Etymology

Romanian borrowed "mănăstire" from Old Church Slavonic "manastyr'", part of the wave of Slavic vocabulary that entered Romanian through medieval Orthodox Christianity. The Slavic word itself came from Greek "monastērion", built on "monos" (alone), the root behind English "monastery" and "monk". So Romanian and English end up with cousin words that arrived by different routes: Romanian through Slavic, English through Latin and French.
