Etymology

The suffix -ime comes from the Latin neuter noun suffix -imen, which formed action or result nouns such as lumen or culmen. In Romanian it was repurposed as a productive way to turn an adjective or noun into a feminine collective or abstract noun. So iute (quick) gives iuțime (speed), and tânăr (young) gives tinerime (the young people, youth).
