Etymology
The noun is built from the adjective înalt (high, tall) plus the suffix -ime, which turns an adjective into an abstract noun of quality, much like English -ness. Înalt continues Latin altus (high) with the common Vulgar Latin prefix in-. Altus itself goes back to the same Indo-European root as the verb alere (to nourish, to grow), since something altus was originally something 'grown tall'.
