Word family
Etymology
Cândva is built from când (when, from Latin quando) plus the indefinite suffix -va. That suffix comes from va, the third person singular of a vrea (to want, to will), and Romanian uses it productively to turn question words into indefinite ones. The same pattern gives cineva (someone), ceva (something), and undeva (somewhere). So cândva literally reads as when-will, meaning at some (unspecified) time.
