Etymology
Romanian borrowed sclav in the nineteenth century from French esclave, part of a wave of French and Italian loanwords that reshaped the Romanian vocabulary at that time. Esclave itself descends from Medieval Latin sclavus, meaning Slav. The word for Slav shifted to mean slave in medieval Western Europe because Slavic peoples were widely captured and sold into bondage.
