Etymology
Romanian borrowed "gay" directly from English in the late twentieth century, as public discourse opened up around sexual orientation. English "gay" itself comes from Old French "gai", meaning joyful or lively, and only took on its modern sense of homosexual in the twentieth century. Romanian kept the English spelling and pronunciation rather than translating the word. It now sits alongside the older, more clinical term "homosexual", but carries a lighter, more everyday tone.
