Etymology
The word was coined in the 19th century by the Austro-Hungarian writer Karl-Maria Kertbeny, who fused the Greek word for "same" with the Latin word for "sex" to name a new clinical category. Romanian took the term from French "homosexuel", part of a wave of French-derived vocabulary that entered Romanian during its 19th-century modernization. The hybrid Greek-Latin coinage then spread across most European languages with almost identical form.
