Etymology

Mândru/mândră is one of the small set of Romanian words whose origin is not traced back to Latin, Slavic, or any other clearly identified source language. Linguists list it among the so-called substrate words, terms thought to survive from the pre-Roman language spoken in the region before Latin arrived, but no direct attestation of that language exists to confirm it. The feminine form mândră is built by adding the standard feminine adjective ending -ă to the root mândr-. Because the deeper origin is unresolved, no reliable Indo-European root or cross-language cognate can be given.
