Etymology

Romanian borrowed "electric" from French "électrique" in the 19th century, part of a wave of French-derived technical vocabulary. The French word traces to New Latin "electricus," coined by William Gilbert around 1600 from Greek "ēlektron," meaning amber, because rubbing amber produces static charge. The deeper origin of "ēlektron" itself is uncertain, so no reliable Indo-European root can be given.
